Experience Saavi 6 Unleashed from 20 July 2024

“Everything is better when we are together”. That is the voice of the adolescents who love to be with their peers. Saavi 6 emerged based on the feedback from one of the participants. One of the regular participants expressed his wish to experience Saavi in an open and natural space.

After exploring many ideas, we came to the thought of bringing together nature and stories from our culture through Saavi 6. The venue was chosen as "Bhavanar School".

Introduction

The introduction was very short as we all know each other and the idea of Saavi workshops. It was good to see the same set of participants joining the workshop.  As the participants getting to know each other deeper, the introduction was more of sharing their own life in the last one-month timeframe.

We were excited to listen to the sharing as we witness the emerging community between these young adults.

Session 1 – Energy bowl

As a facilitator I always wonder at the capability of the young adults and their energy. We wanted to bring exercises which can guide the participants to ground their energy and also invoke an interest to observe themselves. The energy bowl exercise from the Life living Kit by was a perfect choice.

We read the story from the Energy bowl cards and reflected about the details in the story. Then we practiced a guided exercise to get in touch with our own energy bowl. Participants were asked to draw and write about 3 things/actions/emotions that fills or empties their energy bowl. Many things ranging from watching tv, sports, emotions and their wanting to ask sorry to their parents came in the list.

We were grateful to the Life Living kit to bring such a wonderful exercise. We felt blessed to witness the opening of a new door which came through some of the sharing during the session.

Session 2 – Stories and Script writing

The idea was fixed as to explore stories especially stories that are rooted in Culture. As a facilitator I felt bring stories from Tamil culture and having books in Tamil would bring a new energy to the group. We got together as a group and went through each of the books. There was a list of books, some books contained many stories, some of them are stories that had pictures and simple story lines.

Participants were drawn to 2 stories – Story of Little dog – Purple jojo and a story of Kutti Kuruvi who loved Payasam. While I was wondering how these young adults who are seen as grown people still have a need for simple events in life and the need to have humor. Then we got into the process of script writing in Tamil. WE fist started to list out the scenes and the characters. Initially few students were hesitant to write in Tamil due to their language levels. But we sat together and wrote each scene. This was a wonderful process to go through along with the participants.

As a last part the group decided to enact the story. I would say, “It was simple and beautiful.”

Session 3 – Puppet making

In this session we explored string puppets. We showed them a string puppet and provided bamboo sticks, used bottle caps, strings and some of the reusable items from household like caps of the perfume bottles, caps of spray bottles, etc. This was like a tinker workshop where each participant tried to build their own string characters.

Session 4 – Lunch

Lunch is also one of the sessions where we sit and eat together. Participants share, discuss, listen to the train of thoughts from the whole morning session. This is the space we see how the morning session brings back the memories of the young adults.

Session 5 – Emotions

After lunch, we dwelled into the poetry cards from the Life and Living kit. Each card had a line like “You are enough” and a poetry. The back of the card had a set of questions related to the emotions. Each participant chose a card, and we read each card followed by the questions. Each participant shared their thoughts on the questions. The questions provoked many interesting thoughts and answers from the participants. Thanks to “Life and living kit” from creative school for putting together a thought provoking verses and questions.
