Smoke fountain was a fun and challenging thing to make when I came across a Facebook reel showing “How to make a smoke fountain”. Our first model was “A fish fountain” where the smoke needs to come out through the mouth of the fish. Making the model was the easiest part, but when we placed the incense stick it did not work as it was shown in the video. It was a fun filled week, where children experimented different ways – our first thought was we made a mistake in the model, then we turned our observation to “smoke” in other forms. This led to the question of “How is it possible for smoke to travel against gravity?”
For first few days, children felt it would work somehow so they lit incense stick one after another and just lie down and observed the process. Even my 4-year-old was curious to know whether the smoke came through the “mouth of the fish”. Then arose a discussion with my husband about science behind smoke. While children had these experiences, the hardest part as an adult was not to google and see the solution. This went on for a week, then one of our boys thought making a hole in the down side of the incense is a possibility. He tried but the incense sticks broke. The next plan was to learn how to do incense stick at home, but then as an adult I wanted to check if similar product is available in the market. I found out that incense stick used for smoke fountain came with a hole. I ordered one without the knowledge of the children and when it was delivered, I just tried it on the fountain. It worked. This was a moment of discovery for the boys.
Following this event, we tried making different models like Ganesha, house and so on. But the best part was the questions raised in the process and trying to figure out an answer. At the end of 2 weeks, we also came across a video which explains the science behind smoke fountain.
Smoke fountains became our flagship product in making for our stalls. We enjoy making the models and watch the smoke flow...
