Adolescent experience in Organic Market

Updated: May 2

Our Experience in Organic Market.

Our day began early in the morning. We reached the venue around 8 am and started to arrange the stall. The boys were very conscious about how to display. The good thing is they watched the other stalls and learned how to arrange their products.

I like the simplicity of their ideas. When we were searching for a name, they just came up with UNU gallery which is first letter of their names.

The products were Palm leaf keychains, Coconut soap box, Coconut shell cellphone stand, Bamboo Christmas tree, Shell o customized game, DIY satellite kit and Coconut planters.

We arranged the products, wrote the price in small chits, and placed it next to each product. They were very enthusiastic in the beginning. Every time a customer came, they learned something new. After an hour of explaining and not able to sell any of the products, the enthusiasm was going down. At this point, we discussed about how to greet a customer and how to improve their explanation. But at the same time, one of them decided to reduce the price of few products as he saw few customers enquired about the product but kept it back after enquiring the price.

The first customer to buy was a family who we met in a workshop. This gave the boost to their confidence. From this point, there was no turning back. They just addressed each customer as a new one. When This is something, I observed with so much awe. They were able to sell 4 cellphone stands, 1 bamboo Christmas tree, 3 key chains and a planter.

As adolescents, they learned about the people, the product cycle and also more about money. But as an adult, there was so much I learned about the adolescents. The adolescents were able to reach feedback from adults when it was genuine. They took the feedback and worked on it then and there if is possible. For example, they had a set of coconut planter and a plant when a customer asked only for the hanging planter, they decided to split the product and sell it. They reduced the price of the product when they see customers keeping back the products after enquiring the price. They checked the price in other stalls when they saw a similar product. This experience gave a deeper understanding of these young people and raised my respect towards them.
